On a sunny day one can see the big imaginary billboard where John and Yoko proclaimed “war is over”. In Liverpool, at the end of August we celebrate the Mathew Street Festival. According to some it is the world’s biggest festival of cover bands. I thought it would be a Beatles Festival. I thought it would be my Beatles Festival. How wrong I was. When I think Beatles, my mind goes to long hair, peace and love, Sgt Pepper and the magical mystery tour. I think of John singing give “peace a chance”. I think of Linda McCartney veggie sausages and animal rights. I hear ’you say you want a revolution, yeah, I know we all want to change the world”. But, Mathew Street isn’t my Beatles weekend, it the their Beatles weekend. Its ’Love Me Do'and ’She loves You Yeah Yeah Yeah'and the adorable mop tops. It seems that my peace loving hippy Beatles have been erased from the streets during the festival, they have been arrested and sent away, for embracing transcendental mediation and expanding their minds. My Beatles were banished from Liverpool’s streets this August as they themselves, went into their self imposed exile. Wandering the streets during this two day music festival, I wonder if Liverpool still hates hippies? There are no tie dyed shirts, you would be hard pressed to find camper vans for sale in uk, no long hair, a lot of beer, but no smoking. Its a glorious sunny day, but almost nobody is dancing while there are some women in long flowing dresses, they pair them with scary high heels. And the horror at the top of it all? a man with an imagine t-shirt. Imagine there’s no heaven? No: Imagine there’s no YOKO. War might be over, but nobody has given peace a chance.

When people think of growing a garden, they generally think of an outside garden filled with fresh vegetables. There are many people, however, who like to take their gardening craft indoors. There are a few things that need to be followed when maintaining an indoors garden (most importantly to have cleaning supplies onhand so that you are able to confine the mess as much as possible).

Lighting is important for your indoor crops. All plants need light. Sunlight is best, but there are specific types of lighting available for indoor gardens. During summer months, its best to take your plants outside as much as possible so they can soak up the natural rays of the sun. During the colder seasons, indoor lighting is adequate enough.

Plants tend to grow towards the light, so it is important that you rotate your plants each day to keep them growing straight up. Otherwise, you will end up with lopided plants.

Watering your plants is also essential to their survival. Take caution when doing this. You do not want to over water your plants or under water them. An even balance is the key. If you touch the soil and it is moist, your plant can wait another day or two to be watered. However, if you see that the soil in your plants is dry and cracking, that is a good indication that you are not giving them enough water.

Your plants need to be in pots that can drain water out adequately. Typcially, you will find little holes at the bottom of the pots. You will need to put a plate or bowl underneath your potted plants so that when you water them, the water collects in the bowl and not all over your floor.

If your plants are outgrowing their pots, you will need to replant them. It is important that you use a new pot no bigger than 2″more in diameter than the last pot you had the plant in. Having too much room for the roots can shock the plant. The roots need to be able to anchor the plant and if your pot is too big, it will weaken the roots.

During the winter months, the air can get very dry from the heat. You can help your plants out by misting them each morning with a plant mister. This will stimulate natural dew and will keep your plants hydrated.

Like outdoor gardens, indoor plants need fertilization also. You can buy basic indoor plant fertilizers at any grocery store or plant nursery.

Tending to an indoor garden is not that complicated. Your plants just need a little bit of tender loving care just like an outside garden does.

There is nothing more uplifting and full of beauty than sipping tea from one of my Pantone Mini Mugs in my rose garden, while admiring the delicacy and color of these flowers. This little guide will teach you how to grow your own roses. Besides attention and organized gardening skills, you will also need to put soul into what you are doing, and then the result will amaze anybody who enters your oasis.

You must trim your roses when you see those small red buds coming out. Generally, you can prune roses in spring, or even in winter. Use scissors which have strong blades when you are trimming your roses, and do not forget about using a pair of gardening gloves which will keep your hands safe. Start by cleaning up the rose bush, and cut out all the withered or injured branches. After this procedure, you will have several healthy stems. Continue by cutting these off by a half (6 to 8 inches), or to a length that you consider proper. Guide yourself by how tall you want your bush to be, and then you will know exactly how much to cut off from the stems. Use a proper fertilizer once a month, not more. It is best if you choose a liquid one, specifically intended for garden roses.

Fertilizers contain many sources of nourishment so that your plants will grow beautiful and healthy. If you do not have an irrigation system in your garden, make sure that you water your roses vigorously, as they need it during their growth phase especially. In addition, you can keep the roses healthy and blooming if you start adding organic fertilizer compounds such as grass, pine needles or straw. Fertilization process must end in early autumn; otherwise, the cold season might destroy your entire rose bush. In order to encourage blooming, deadheading your roses is very helpful. Additionally, if you live in a region where winters are very cold, do not forget to wrap your rosebush with a protective material, in order to safeguard it from freezing.

Did you know that the Environmental Protection Agency reports that homeowners in North America use approximately 136 million pounds of pesticides on their gardens and their lawns? That is an extremely toxic amount not just in the air but on our food. The best way to keep the bad bugs away is by using bugs that will eat them. The main thing is to know which ones are bad and which ones are good. This isn’t as hard as it may seem, however if you’re still not sure what is attacking your plants then you can start adding good bugs to attract more good bugs.

The bad bugs that normally attack a garden are aphids and cabbage moths. Aphids appear in groups on the young leaves or stems of your plants. Sometimes you will find entire colonies on the bottom half of the leaves. These are lethal to your garden. Aphids cause plants to mutate, stop growing and suck the plant dry of sap. They also cause the rotting mold looking substance that will damage your plants. Adult Cabbage Moths don’t hurt your plants directly. What they do is lay dozens of eggs on your leaves that will then hatch and eat through the leaves like they are in starvation mode.

To combat these two destructive insects it is best to load up the garden with natures cleaning supplies, Ladybugs. Yes, these tiny insects love to eat aphids. If you want to attract them naturally then surround your garden with dill, dandelions and angelica. Otherwise, you can actually purchase small quantities of Ladybugs. Want something that will eat almost anything? Purchase a Praying Mantis. They will eat grasshoppers, beetles, grubs, aphids and much more. If it moves it may get eaten. Using nature’s own pest control method is much better than adding on all of the harmful pesticides.

A new report has described how global Warming and climate change may be disastrous for a large swathe of Britain’s communities if estimates become realities. A study from the Brighton and Hove City Council suggests that over 60,000 Britons will be at an increased risk of flooding in future decades and that such communities would struggle to cope with the impacts of flooding when such an event takes place. The government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs stated that up to 11,000 of properties in Brighton could be affected by flooding at some point in the future, including around 1000 in Saltdean and Rottingdean and around 8,500 in nearby Hove. The most vulnerable locations in the Brighton/Hove urban area include Lewes Road and London Road, which are identified as high risk flood areas. Experts have also suggested that it would be difficult for crews to rescue people in need on these roads due their geographical location. Buildings along these roads generally date from the Victorian era, many of which contain basements that would quickly become swamped with floodwater in the event of a flood. As many of these properties are well over 100 years old, the drainage systems of these buildings need to be replaced before a ‘one in thirty year’ flood event takes place, the council has said.

While most of us are thinking about our next club med ski holiday, climate change in Britain has already led to milder winters and warmer summers, despite the poorer summers of recent years and last year’s cold winter. The Met Office currently expects summer temperatures to rise by as much as 6.4 degrees Celsius by 2080 – which would make British summer temperatures more akin to those of southwest France today, although many dispute this prediction, branding it as a major overestimation. The government has even suggested that a siesta break should be introduced during the summer months. However, this would be highly unlikely due to the fact that Britain’s geographical position means that hot, dry summers are highly unlikely to become a ‘feature’ of the country’s maritime climate.

My hands were scratched, but I can clean them off with some hand towels when I get home, no biggie. It was clearly worth it to get the fat gooseberry that was hiding under the bush. When I popped it into my mouth, I rejoiced at the wonder of it all! What would I do without berry bushes? I am not a very good gardener. I like to sow seeds and see which of them like the soil the most. Let the plant choose if it wants to grow. And as for thinning, don’t get me started. It is just too difficult for me to arbitrarily end the life of a growing thing. Which is why at the moment, I am the proud mother of a mountain of weakling tomato plants. My spinach suffers, but little pots of strawberries seem to be doing well, purple sprouting broccoli isn’t, but red leaf lettuce seems to be hanging on. My secret garden is very tolerant and loving of my on again, off again ability to water and care. But the secret to my success has been the alliance of other hippy gardeners in a community plot. Over ten years an anarchic array of sustainable bushes, trees, and herbs has been planted and all they need is a positive vibe, and somebody to appreciate them and year after year they come back in wonder. Do you know what happens when you don’t properly tend a raspberry bush? They revert to the wild, very small, but the absolutely sweetest thing you can possibly pop in your mouth. Perhaps this is a lesson to us all. Its the opposite of the ’I can’t be bothered’attitude. Its the ’let it be with love’or ’if you love me set me free’type of gardening. I don’t try to have a master/slave relationship with my fruit and veg. No, not me, no killing in the name of the survival of the fittest. And the payoff? some beautiful gooseberries and wait till you see the apples.

With the growth of the fuel use around the globe, the problems in front of our environment increase since the more petrolbased fuels we use, the more we pollute the ecosystem of the Earth. This is the reason why many car producers now turn to the alternative biofuels which are produced by different kinds of biomass -an ecologically friendly way to use transportation which would cause almost now harm on the atmosphere and the living organisms in the planet.

The first generation of biofules was developed at first by Swiss scientists, later approved and improved by European, American and Asian specialists. It is mainly produced from animal fats, sugar, strach or vegetable oil. Even though they provide an efficient and more protective way to use transportation, they are still not that effective in preserving the eco system since their production is related with a lot of process that additionally pollute the atmosphere.

However, the first generation biofuels let the scientists to believe that not only the sources used can be the resource of environmentally harmless energy -thus the second and third generation of biofuels appeared. Mainly produced from different crops or crop remainings, these biofuels have become a field of expertise for the Swiss alternative fuel deveopers who now produce harmlessly the green diesel fuel using only remainings from wheat and corn stocks, using grass after being cut from the parks or uninhabited areas as well as remainigs from different already death plants. Thus fuels are gradually becoming more and more efficient and their usage is almost harmless to the environment and the atmosphere in particular.

By currently developing the fourth generation of bio fuels, people are aiming to create a harmless and efficient way to use transportation without the need to destroy wildlife and plant life while refining and extracting oil -petrol fuels not only harm the ecosystem while produced, but significantly influence the negative climate changes when used.

Gardening is not an activity meant for the outdoor alone. Indoor gardening would mean the activity of planting those varieties that would have sustained growth in flower pots. They add beauty to the room as well provide for a healthy atmosphere within the room. Indoor gardening is known to have a substantial reducing effect on pollution as well as cleansing the room from obnoxious gasses, along with providing a soothing and calming effect to the eyes.

There is however issues that need to be borne in mind while deciding to opt for indoor gardening. One of the most important aspects is the selection of the plant that can be grown indoors. There are certain species of plants that are poisonous even though they appear to be very attractive by looks. Such plants specially should be avoided in houses that have small children. There are plants too that cause allergy, or their pollen causes such medical problems upon some individuals. Knowledge about such plants is to be gathered prior to deciding on the plant that is to be grown.

Once the plant has been decided, the next issue that needs to be addressed is the place for positioning the pot containing the plant, after all, you wouldn’t want to live in a storage space would you? Some plants cannot sustain continuous sunlight while others thrive on it. Window sills are the best place to locate plants that need sunlight, while close to the window yet not in direct path of the light source is the best place for plants that cannot sustain continuous sunlight.

Some plants have their leaves turning pale when exposed to the direct light from sun and yet the plant requires sunlight. Such cases could be placed close to the window with a curtain drawn across it.

It is but little care and some sense of selection that one requires to grow and mend a healthy happy indoor garden.

We all know that owning and operating a car is not a very environmentally friendly thing to do, in fact researchers and different car companies are trying to find alternatives to the traditional fuel-guzzling automobile. These come in the form of high efficiency cars and today it is quite commonplace to see a hybrid car in most auto dealers, becoming a more viable option for purchase.

All that said however, there is still an argument that the only way to truly reduce the impact that we are having on the environment through automobiles, is to actually decrease the amount that we drive. But unless you live in the center of a city, or have a lot of spare cash to take a taxi whenever you need one, this isn’t really an option for most of us.

Well roll on the car clubs. This idea is still relatively new in metropolitan areas, but is definitely taking off. The general gist of it is that everyone in the club pays a membership fee, they are processed through the company and then get a card. Whenever you need a car you can look online and find one of many ‘parked’ cars that are near you. You rent it out for a certain amount of time, open it with your card, drive it around, then when you are done return it to where it was originally parked. You pay per hour depending on the type of car, but the company covers insurance, congestion charge, gas, and the upkeep of the car.

The largest of these companies is Zipcar, which owns cars all over the world. And if you are traveling, and find yourself needing a car in Toronto or New York, you can just as easily book a car and open it with the same card you use on this side of the ocean. All of this sounds too good to be true, so I figured living in the middle of London I should try it.

It has been two years since I have joined, and I haven’t looked back. Not only do I need to worry about my car, but I can choose the car that I need for the journey, from small get around cars to sleek date cars, they are all at my fingertips and located all over London. And with the recent purchase of Streetcar, Zipcar will just keep getting bigger and better. So if you’re not really fussed about owning what you drive, I totally recommend giving a car club a chance.
